 I've got an art show at the beginning of the new year and have been trying to make some new work for it. This was my first, and probably best project with my recently acquired watercolor pens.

FACE IN FACE, HOMAGE

 

Two recent pictures. The first is my latest painting, which has gotten a notable response for how vaginal it is. This was not intentional, but not exactly accidental either. Actually, it was originally the front view of a fish, but that image from that angle proved to be too difficult, so I turned the outline into something else.

The second picture is an image I made for my girlfriend of us and our dog. I tried to do it in the style of Bill Waterson, which proved to be a little trickery then expected.

DESERT AND MACARTHUR

 This first one is a picture from our annual Black Rock Desert camping Trip. Love the pose and the angle of the shot. I actually painted this on the label for my bristol board. Turns out every pack comes with an extra sheet of good material ovesized paper!

This was actually a picture I started more then five years ago and didnt' finish. Found it recently and wrapped it up. I don't even have the original photo anymore, so I just winged it. I used to be so uptight with my work, I'm so much more productive now that I can be looser and willing to work with what I've got.

I completed this painting a while ago, then totally forgot it existed. Found it behind a stack of comic books, such a pleasant surprise!

TARANTULA, ART SHOW

I've been bad about posting, but I have been quite busy with art lately. This first picture is from a one page comic I'm making. I was really blown away by how good this tarantula turned out...

...So I decided to make it a painting for an upcoming pop up show. I made the painting on a scrap piece of plywood in one day. I think it came out really well. People really liked the pastel background. I'm thinking of doing a series of these. They're really easy and people like them. Plus, I've got a ton of scrap plywood.

 This one sold at the show. Here's a pick of my work hanging:

SKELETOR AND SNAKE MOUNTAIN

A picture of Skeletor I made for a friend. Might do some more Masters of the Universe fan art, a big fan of their absurd character designs.

ORANGUTAN

My friend suggested I add the lipstick to this picture. I love how it instantly transforms a pretty normal primate painting into something quite strange and creepy.

ART WALK

I displayed my art as part of the First Friday Art Walk in Nevada City. I was showing in a chocolate shop, which sounded like a bad fit to me, but as soon as I saw my work in that setting I realized it made perfect sense. My long running drive to paint with neon and pastels, and as much bright pink as I can fit in a picture made it go really well in a candy setting.

This was my most successful art show yet. I sold five paintings and lined up two potential sales in the future. I also sold a couple graphic novels and a dozen or so zines. I really appreciated how well this all went, and have no complaints! Also I received the greatest backhanded compliment of my life: 'oh, your art looks just like my 11 year old's!'

 

At this event I also premiered a new mini zine my friend Pat and I made together.  It has four titles and is about a boy and a frog. good stuff.

MY MONSTER AND ME

An old sketch I made into a painting. Quick and fun project. I think I want to do a children's book in this style someday.

Space Wooble

My latest painting. Based on an old sketch, I painted this in two days. Lately I've found that painting faster works far better. I'm more likely to actually finish the painting if done quickly, and it tends to have more motion and character to it.

ORANGUTAN AND BLUE-CROWNED MOTMOT

Two paintings on some scrap wood. Left is an orangutan, right is a blue-crowned motmot. They were both fast projects, though the orangutan only took an hour or two. I made a wire wrapping to suspend each painting for display.

SPERBLE ELITE PAINTING VIDEO 2

A Sperble Elite painting, music by my girlfriend and I.The painting isn't perfect, or the music, but as a whole I think it's pretty cool. These sped up painting videos are fun to make!
